Highlights of Recent Research Projects
Study of the demand for, and the availability of, broadband network services by local and long-distance carriers. Included in the analyses were pricing comparisons of ATM, Frame Relay, and IP based services with alternatives such as TCP/IP, ATM, T-1 and T-3 fiber-optic dedicated lines. Prices of broadband equipment used in service provisioning and on customer premises were evaluated relative to current alternatives.
Analysis of the availability and economics of IP based services nation-wide. Tariffs of local exchange carriers (LECs) and interexchange carriers (IECs) were analyzed from an end-user perspective. Five-year forecasts of service availability and pricing were prepared.
Study of private corporate voice and data networks, including LANs, MANs, WANs, and the trends toward hybrid network implementation, outsourcing, virtual networks, and the evolution of broadband solutions, including Frame Relay, SMDS, SONET, ATM, Internet (IP, VoIP) and B-ISDN.
Market study of emerging business opportunities in wireless voice and data communications, including personal communications service (PCS), and issues of regulation, frequency allocation, technologies (FDMA, TDMA, CDMA), competitive positioning, and market entry strategies.
Study of the markets and pricing structures in the USA and several leading European countries of mobile communication services including cellular services and PCS as well as paging, SMR, and wireless data communication services.
Study of product definition, strategy and positioning including channel and pricing issues for two ATM vendors. Study of network management global market and associated technology, standards and regulatory issues. Study of new services offering by the carriers in the converging services market.
